Teen Driver Jailed for Five Years Over Sheffield Crash That Killed Friend

The judge called the case a warning to new drivers about showboating at extreme speed.

Overview

  • Corey Owen Cooper, 19, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury.
  • The crash occurred on November 11, 2023, a day after he passed his test, when he lost control of his grandfather’s Fiat on Myers Grove Lane in a 20mph zone.
  • Police evidence put the car at about 53mph before it struck a barrier, following earlier wheel spins and “doughnuts” in a car park.
  • Another passenger, named as Gabe Wiggett, suffered serious injuries, and a witness reported the overturned car and Cooper saying he had killed his best friend.
  • Friends said dashboard warning lights had been on due to a faulty ABS system, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals said Josh Atkins’s donated organs saved four people.
