Teen Driver Charged With 3 Counts of Murder in University of Arizona Crosswalk Hit-and-Run

Police say he turned himself in after the crash, with an evaluation alleging impairment.

Overview

  • Tucson police say a 2019 Porsche Boxster struck three pedestrians in a marked crosswalk near campus around 11 p.m. on Oct. 30 and then fled.
  • The victims were identified as Sophia Akimi Troetel, 21, and Josiah Patrick Santos, 22, who died at the scene, and Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza, 21, who died at the hospital on Nov. 1.
  • The alleged driver, 19-year-old Louis John Artal, turned himself in the next morning and was evaluated by an Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit officer who alleged alcohol and/or drug impairment.
  • Artal now faces three counts of second-degree murder and one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and he was booked into Pima County custody.
  • Jail records show a $250,000 cash bond was granted as the investigation continues, and the university says it is providing support to affected students, faculty, and staff.
