Teen Critically Injured and Young Woman Killed in Separate NYC Subway Incidents

Law enforcement has increased patrols, made arrests, rolled out a new safety campaign to discourage perilous subway riding among teenagers.

Overview

  • A 14-year-old boy fell from the roof of a northbound No. 5 train near the Baychester Ave. station in the Bronx and remains in critical but stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center.
  • Police arrested a 17-year-old and charged him with reckless endangerment and trespass in connection with the Bronx subway surfing incident; a third teen is still being sought.
  • A 24-year-old woman was struck and killed by a northbound L train at Union Square station after she jumped onto the tracks, and authorities say they do not suspect criminal intent.
  • The NYPD has made 79 arrests for subway surfing so far this year and deployed drones to patrol above-ground lines for illegal riding.
  • The MTA has expanded its “Ride Inside and Stay Alive” campaign with BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester after six surfing deaths last year and two so far this year.
