Teen Charged as Police Seek Others in St Kilda Pier Assault on Norwegian Tourist

Investigators have charged a 19-year-old in the case.

Overview

  • A 19-year-old from Deer Park surrendered to police and was charged with assault, intentionally causing injury, robbery, affray and theft before being bailed to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 8.
  • The December 18 attack at about 1pm on St Kilda Pier involved at least eight people, left the 34-year-old visitor with a broken arm and facial injuries, and saw his phone stolen and thrown into the bay.
  • Police have released images of three men and a woman in their late teens to early 20s they wish to speak to, including a woman with distinctive tattoos on her chest, leg and arm.
  • Detectives say the group’s claim that the tourist had been taking photos was used as a pretext, noting that phone contents viewed before its destruction did not support that allegation.
  • The victim has returned to Norway, and investigators are urging bystanders or anyone with footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
