Teen Charged After Carrick High School Stabbing as Security Procedures Face Review

Investigators are examining how a knife cleared screening at the cafeteria entrance used by late-arriving students.

Overview

  • Three students were injured in a hallway altercation at Carrick High School: two were hospitalized with abdominal wounds (one critical, one stable) and a third was treated for a minor laceration.
  • The 16-year-old suspect, identified in a criminal complaint as Anthony Taulton, told police he stabbed three classmates and faces aggravated assault and weapons charges.
  • According to the complaint, the student brought a kitchen knife to school wrapped in a hat inside his bookbag, passed through metal detectors with a bag search, then moved the knife to his hoodie pocket.
  • The student’s mother alerted school safety about a possible conflict roughly 30 minutes before the incident, and district leaders said security protocols and aging metal detectors are under review.
  • Police continue to collect video evidence, and Pittsburgh Public Schools said classes will shift to remote learning Thursday and Friday as the investigation proceeds.
