Teen Boys Rescued After Falling Through Thin Ice on Minnesota's Straight Lake

Officials urge residents to stay off area lakes due to unsafe early-season ice in unusually warm November conditions.

Overview

  • Deputies were called to Straight Lake in Osage around 2:51 p.m. Tuesday after a report that two teens had fallen through the ice.
  • The boys, ages 13 and 14, were in a small Otter-style cargo sled while attempting to ice fish when the ice gave way.
  • A Minnesota DNR officer used a boat to break a path from the lake access, and with a Hubbard County deputy aboard, reached the teens and brought them to shore.
  • EMS evaluated both boys and reported no injuries.
  • Responders included Becker County deputies and dive team, the DNR, Hubbard County, local fire/rescue and ambulance units, and authorities are advising people to stay off lakes until ice thickens, with the DNR generally recommending at least 4 inches for walking.
