Teen Arrested After Salinas Cannabis Heist Ends in Multi-Agency Chase to Gilroy

Officers from multiple agencies chased a Tesla nearly 30 miles from Salinas to Gilroy after a greenhouse break-in early Tuesday.

Overview

  • A security guard reported the burglary around 1:40 a.m. at a Potter Road greenhouse, where three to four people loaded bags of cannabis into a white Tesla and a silver or gray Honda.
  • Salinas police spotted the Tesla on Highway 101 at Laurel Drive, the driver failed to yield, and the pursuit continued north into Santa Clara County.
  • The Tesla was boxed in a Gilroy cul-de-sac, three occupants ran, a 17-year-old male was arrested, and two suspects escaped despite a yard-to-yard search.
  • Deputies recovered what they described as a large load of cannabis from the Tesla, with bags found under the hood, behind the driver’s seat, and filling the trunk.
  • The Honda crashed into a ditch near Highway 101 and Gould Road south of Salinas, and investigators asked the public to submit tips to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
