Ted Danson Recalls Stepson Catching Friends Watching Mary Steenburgen’s Scene in Melvin and Howard

The podcast episode with Kathryn Hahn highlighted similar parent–child awkwardness.

Overview

  • Danson said Charlie McDowell, then about 15, returned from getting a sandwich to find a friend had landed on his mother’s nude scene from the 1980 film Melvin and Howard.
  • McDowell reacted angrily and confronted his friend, saying, “That’s my mom. What are you doing?!” according to Danson’s account on Where Everybody Knows Your Name.
  • Danson noted the scene comes from the role that earned Steenburgen an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
  • Guest Kathryn Hahn related that her teenage son avoids her raunchier work, recalling that she fast-forwarded much of Step Brothers when showing it to her kids.
  • Danson added that his own mother reportedly watched his 1981 film Body Heat with her hands over her eyes, and he and Steenburgen have a blended family formed after their 1995 marriage.
