Overview

  • The B.C. government granted an environmental assessment certificate to extend the life of Canada’s largest copper mine near Kamloops.
  • Highland Valley Copper sits about 50 kilometres southwest of Kamloops and has been producing copper since the 1960s.
  • Teck estimates the expansion will create roughly 2,900 jobs during construction and support about 1,500 roles once operational.
  • President Jonathan Price said earthworks have commenced and the company is pursuing additional permits ahead of its board’s year-end construction vote.
  • The Mining Association of BC is calling on regulators to fast-track approvals to further bolster the province’s mining sector and job growth.
