Overview
- The Royal Household and the Teatro Real announced on Sept. 17 that the 16-seat Palco Real will be offered to representatives of social and humanitarian groups when not required for official use.
- The first implementation is set for Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, during performances of Verdi’s Otello, with invitees chosen by partner organizations.
- Proposed selectors include UNICEF, ACNUR (UNHCR), UNESCO, Médecins Sans Frontières, Cruz Roja Española, Cáritas, Save the Children, AECID, Manos Unidas and Paz y Desarrollo.
- Access will pause whenever the monarchs attend or when a production needs the box for staging or technical purposes.
- Beyond the customary opening-night royal presence, the remaining Otello dates are slated to seat civil-society representatives, a notable change for a box long reserved since the theatre’s 1850 opening.
