Teardowns Confirm Qualcomm X80 in iPhone 17 Flagships, Apple C1X in Air

The findings point to U.S.-only mmWave on X80 models, highlighting Apple’s gradual shift toward in‑house modems.

Overview

  • Repair specialist Ycs Yang’s teardown, posted on Bilibili and shared on Reddit, identifies Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 in the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
  • Apple retains its own C1X modem in the iPhone Air and the earlier C1 in the iPhone 16e, confirming a mixed-supplier strategy across the lineup.
  • mmWave support is enabled only on U.S. versions of the X80-equipped models, and Canadian carriers have not deployed mmWave yet.
  • Qualcomm markets the X80 with 5G Advanced features and an on-chip AI accelerator aimed at better speeds, latency, coverage and power efficiency.
  • Qualcomm has unveiled the successor Snapdragon X85, and CEO Cristiano Amon says devices using it will show a large performance gap versus iPhones on X80.
