Teamsters Sue Horizon Air Over Changes to Pilot Rest Rules

The union says the airline is forcing pilots who report fatigue to travel before getting contractually required rest and is asking a federal judge to restore those protections.

Overview

  • The Teamsters Airline Division and Local 1224 filed a federal complaint on Oct. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington challenging Horizon’s handling of fatigue reports.
  • The lawsuit alleges Horizon now makes pilots who report fatigue at their home base travel as airline passengers to another city before they can take the rest time written into their contract.
  • The union asks the court to find the practice violates the collective bargaining agreement and the Railway Labor Act and to order Horizon to restore the negotiated rest protections.
  • Pilots have stepped up pressure with informational pickets in Seattle and Boise and a reported 99 percent vote of no confidence in Horizon’s senior vice president of operations, Carlos Zendejas.
  • The case is pending and unresolved, negotiations over a new contract have stalled for more than three years, and a court ruling could immediately change how Horizon handles fatigue reports and crews’ rest periods.
