Teamsters Launch Unfair Labor Practice Strike in Orange County

The union says the walkout seeks retroactive pay after months of stalled bargaining as county officials activate contingency plans to keep essential services running.

Overview

  • More than 465 Teamsters Local 952 members walked off the job and began picketing on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after contract talks with the County of Orange failed to produce an agreement.
  • Striking workers come from OC Public Works, OC Waste & Recycling, OC Community Resources and other county operations and include heavy equipment operators, waste workers and custodial staff.
  • The union has filed an unfair labor practice charge alleging the county bargained in bad faith and refused to include retroactive pay that would cover wages lost during the negotiation delay.
  • Orange County officials said they respect lawful strike rights and have activated contingency plans to minimize disruptions to road and flood-channel maintenance, landfill operations, parks and vehicle repairs.
  • The dispute follows a recent Board of Supervisors pay increase and could prolong wage losses for striking workers, raise pressure on supervisors to act and risk service delays for more than 3 million county residents.
