Teachers’ Strike Escalates After Union Rejects Raise Plan as Court Fast-Tracks PM Dismissal Case

Union leaders say classes will resume only after a negotiated agreement is signed.

Overview

  • More than 20,000 staff from 352 schools and kindergartens in Ulaanbaatar have joined the walkout, according to the teachers’ union, with provincial figures being consolidated.
  • The Government proposed a 20% pay rise from January 1, 2026 and a further 10% from July 1, 2026, projecting average pay of 3.05–3.48 million MNT depending on location.
  • Union officials rejected the staged plan and reiterated their demand for a 3.5 million MNT base salary within this year, saying the strike will continue until a signed deal is reached.
  • Parliament’s Human Development and Budget committees moved to form a joint working group on teacher and health worker pay following a petition backed by 33,038 supporters; the labor ministry estimates 831 billion MNT would be needed for planned wage and pension increases.
  • The Constitutional Court opened an urgent plenary on the legality of the Prime Minister’s dismissal process, declined a recusal request regarding Judge O. Munkhsaikhan, heard a report, and shifted part of the session to closed proceedings, with government representatives alleging unequal speaking time.
