Teacher Blockades Snarl Access to Mexico City as Peru Sets Transport Talks

Officials reported traffic operations as educators pressed pay and staffing grievances across key corridors.

Overview

  • Teachers from MMCRE and CNTE began coordinated actions around 11:00, blocking the MéxicoPuebla caseta at San Marcos, the México–Pachuca corridor at Puente de Fierro in Ecatepec, the MéxicoTexcoco road, and holding a rally in Toluca.
  • They lifted toll barriers at San Marcos to allow free passage, while maintaining their protest to draw attention to unpaid salaries, job regularization and school repairs.
  • The Ecatepec blockade on Vía Morelos forced a temporary suspension of Mexibús lines 2 and 4 after protesters occupied the exclusive bus lane.
  • Mexico City’s SSC and C5 listed at least 14 mobilizations across the capital, advised travelers to plan routes, and said state and city authorities were in communication with union representatives.
  • In Peru, the Transport Ministry scheduled an emergency meeting with transport unions for October 9 to address extortion-driven violence; no new nationwide shutdown was set for that day, and student groups called a national strike for October 15.
