Taylor Swift Welcomed by Illuminated Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio

Swift's fans raised $37,000 for charity, leading to a special illumination of the iconic statue amid her Brazil tour.

  • Taylor Swift's fans, known as Swifties, initiated a charitable act that resulted in Rio's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue being illuminated with a welcome message for the singer, who is in Brazil for her Eras Tour.
  • The Swifties' request to project a Swift-inspired image onto the statue went viral on social media, leading Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes to take the matter to Rev. Omar Raposo, the rector of the sanctuary that manages the statue.
  • In exchange for the projection, Raposo challenged the Swifties to raise funds for the Catholic Church's World Day of the Poor. The fans raised about 180,000 reais (approximately $37,000) in one day, covering the cost of 20,000 loaves of panettones and bottled water for Rio's homeless.
  • With the fundraising goal met, the statue was lit on Thursday night. A small team from the sanctuary and a few Swifties began distributing the food and drink to those in need that evening.
  • Swift is currently on the international leg of her tour, with six shows scheduled in Brazil. The first three will be at Rio's Estádio Nilton Santos, and the following week she will perform in São Paulo at three shows at Allianz Parque stadium.
