Tawi Riverfront Boat Trial Draws 5,000, Setting Stage for Permanent Boating

The trial clears the way for tenders to launch permanent, privately operated boating from March.

Overview

  • The two-day free boating festival at Jammu’s new Tawi artificial lake concluded on January 29, with about 5,000 people taking rides.
  • JSCL said the event met its testing goals and confirmed plans to invite local entrepreneurs to run regular boating and allied activities on a permanent basis.
  • Safety protocols were actively implemented with SDRF teams, trained personnel, life jackets and rescue boats deployed along the stretch.
  • Officials highlighted flood-management features including a spillover mechanism to release excess water and maintained pondage of about three to four metres, with technology-driven systems for rainy-season risks.
  • Phase one spans 2.7 km and has cost ₹131 crore plus roughly ₹30 crore in finishing works, as the riverfront debuts with cultural performances and Dogra cuisine to build its tourism appeal.
