Tattersalls Book 1 Nears Record at 128.6m Guineas With Godolphin on Top

International buyers kept prices high despite worries about British racing's fragile economics.

Overview

  • The three-day Newmarket sale totaled 128.6 million guineas (about £134 million) including private sales, with an average of 319,206 guineas and a median of 200,000 guineas.
  • Godolphin spent almost 20 million guineas on 23 yearlings and secured the 3.7 million-guineas Sea The Stars colt after outbidding Amo Racing’s Kia Joorabchian.
  • Seventy lots sold for 500,000 guineas or more, with several Frankel and Wootton Bassett yearlings making multimillion-guinea prices.
  • Twenty-five offspring of the late sire Wootton Bassett realized 14.5 million guineas in total, including a 2.2 million-guineas colt bought by Amo Racing.
  • U.S. and Gulf participation was strong, with American demand aided by a first-year tax write-off provision, as Tattersalls moves on to Books 2 and 3 from October 13.
