Overview
- The retrospective, which opened Wednesday, July 15, 2026, displays more than 120 works at Tate Modern and will run through January 17, 2027.
- The show reunites key films and performances and rests on Tate’s expanded moving-image holdings, making it the largest UK exhibition of Mendieta to date.
- Several ephemeral pieces were restaged for the exhibition in close collaboration with Raquel Cecilia Mendieta, the artist’s niece and head of her estate, to approximate original materials and settings.
- The presentation centers Mendieta’s 'Silueta' earth-body works and films that probe human–nature relations, identity, ecology, spirituality, and temporality, with works such as Sweating Blood, Blood Feathers, Grass Breathing, and Moffitt Building Piece included.
- Tate’s long-term collecting since 2009 and the estate’s decade-long archival work aim to correct the record and invite new readings of Mendieta’s relevance to contemporary art, scholarship, and younger audiences.
