Overview

  • Judge Geraint Walters imposed a £1.5 million fine and £26,318.67 in prosecution costs at Swansea Crown Court on July 31, 2025.
  • The conviction follows failures to properly isolate a coil tilter, guard hazardous areas and warn contractors that machinery had been restarted.
  • In September 2019 contractor Justin Day was called back to the site to repair an oil leak and was unaware the machine was live when he returned.
  • CCTV footage played in court showed Day triggering sensors that activated the coil tilter, fatally crushing him.
  • In a victim impact statement his wife, Zoe Day, described constant flashbacks and ongoing grief over the needless loss of her husband.
