Tata Sets Harrier and Safari Petrol Launch for Dec. 9 as Sierra Debuts New 1.5-Litre Engines

The Hyperion 1.5 T-GDI debuts on the Sierra first, with a derived 1.5 NA petrol slated for its base trims to lower entry prices.

Overview

  • Tata will introduce petrol-powered Harrier and Safari SUVs in India on December 9, following the Sierra’s internal-combustion launch on November 25.
  • The new 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol is quoted at roughly 168–170 hp and about 280 Nm, using GDI, an aluminium block, a water-cooled VGT and an integrated exhaust manifold, and it meets BS6 Phase II and E20 norms.
  • The Sierra is also expected to offer a simpler 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol for entry variants, targeting around 120 hp and 140 Nm for a lower starting price.
  • Manual and automatic gearboxes are anticipated across the petrol range, though the exact automatic type has not been confirmed.
  • Pricing for petrol variants is expected to sit slightly below equivalent diesel trims, with some reports also noting unconfirmed industry chatter that Jeep is evaluating Tata’s 1.5 turbo for future models.
