Tata Power, Bhutan’s DGPC Seal PPP for 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydropower Project

The World Bank–backed venture positions Bhutan to export most generation to India from 2031.

Overview

  • Tata Power will take a 40% stake in a special purpose vehicle with an equity commitment of Rs 1,572 crore to be infused in tranches.
  • Druk Green Power Corporation will hold 60% of the equity, with the total project cost estimated at Rs 13,100 crore.
  • Commercial and concession agreements were signed in Thimphu by Praveer Sinha and Dasho Chhewang Rinzin in the presence of Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay.
  • The run-of-the-river project on the Kurichhu River will feature six 187.5 MW units with six-hour pondage for peaking.
  • About 80% of output is planned for supply to India, the SPV will become an associate of Tata Power on completion, and commissioning is targeted for September 2031.
