Tata Opens First Overseas Defence Plant in Morocco to Build WhAP 8×8

The Morocco-based facility begins localized production of India’s DRDO–Tata combat vehicle platform, positioning itself as a gateway for future exports.

Overview

  • India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Morocco’s Abdelatif Loudyi jointly inaugurated the 20,000 sq m TASL facility in Berrechid, which became operational three months early.
  • Under a contract with Morocco, production of the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8 is underway, with initial deliveries to the Royal Moroccan Army slated for October.
  • The site is the first overseas defence manufacturing facility established by a private Indian company and is described as Morocco’s largest defence plant.
  • Approximately one-third of components will be sourced and assembled locally at the outset, with local value addition targeted to rise to 50% as jobs and a supplier base scale up.
  • The DRDOTASL–designed WhAP offers modular variants from IFV and APC to reconnaissance, command post, mortar carrier and ambulance, with the plant intended to serve future export orders.
