Tata Opens First Overseas Defence Plant in Morocco to Build DRDO WhAP 8×8

The plant advances India’s export-focused defence strategy with WhAP deliveries to Morocco starting in October.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Berrechid facility during his visit, joined by Morocco’s defence minister Abdeltif Loudyi.
  • The 20,000 sq m site is Tata Advanced Systems’ first overseas defence factory and the first Indian defence manufacturing unit in Africa.
  • Production of the DRDO–Tata Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8 has begun under a Moroccan government contract, with initial vehicles due next month.
  • The facility became operational three months ahead of schedule and is described as Morocco’s largest armoured-vehicle plant.
  • Tata says the plant will first equip the Royal Moroccan Army before pursuing exports to other African partners, aligning with India’s rising defence exports and global outreach.
