Tata Memorial Centre Kicks Off BIMSTEC Cancer Care Training in Mumbai

Bringing 21 oncology professionals from four member countries to Mumbai, the four-week course paves the way for new modules; future sessions will be hosted at Tata Memorial Centre satellite units

Overview

  • Twenty-one participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal began hands-on training in Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology at Tata Memorial Centre’s Mumbai campus.
  • The intensive four-week classroom and clinical programme is part of India’s institutional capacity-building drive under the BIMSTEC Charter adopted in 2022.
  • Dr Sudeep Gupta, director of Tata Memorial Centre, said training will rotate next to nine regional TMC units to extend oncology capacity across India.
  • A proposal to expand the curriculum to 12 modules and determine whether the programme will run quarterly, biannually or annually is currently under review.
  • Officials aim to leverage the initiative to build a collaborative research network and improve cancer care outcomes across South and Southeast Asia.
