Tata, Mahindra, Renault Cut Car Prices as GST 2.0 Resets Auto Tax Rates

Small cars shift to 18% GST, larger vehicles face a flat 40%, EVs stay at 5%.

Overview

  • Tata Motors published model-wise reductions of up to ₹1.55 lakh across cars and SUVs, with new ex-showroom prices effective September 22 when GST 2.0 takes effect.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra began passing on the benefit from September 6 on eligible SUVs, announcing cuts up to about ₹1.56 lakh across models including XUV3XO, Thar, Scorpio-N and XUV700.
  • Renault India will reduce prices by up to ₹96,395 on Kwid, Triber and Kiger, with revised prices applying to deliveries on or after September 22; bookings at new rates have opened.
  • Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bhargava said the company will align prices with the revised structure, indicating estimated drops of ₹40,000–₹50,000 on Alto and ₹60,000–₹67,000 on Wagon R.
  • The GST Council’s overhaul takes effect September 22, moving qualifying small cars and bikes under 350cc to 18% GST and placing bigger vehicles at 40%, while the concessional 5% rate for EVs is retained.
