Overview

• From September 22, many sub‑4‑metre cars with petrol engines under 1200cc or diesel under 1500cc move to an 18% GST rate from 28%.
• Tata Motors released model‑wise reductions effective September 22, including Tiago ₹75,000, Tigor ₹80,000, Altroz ₹1.10 lakh, Punch ₹85,000, Curvv ₹65,000, Harrier ₹1.40 lakh, Safari ₹1.45 lakh and a ₹1.55 lakh cut on Nexon.
• Maruti Suzuki chairman R. C. Bhargava called the reform a landmark and indicated estimated cuts of about ₹40,000–50,000 on Alto K10 and ₹60,000–67,000 on Wagon R, with final price lists yet to be issued.
• Small cars made up roughly 61% of April–July passenger‑vehicle sales, and industry commentary points to a likely demand lift during the festive period.
• The new structure also sets a 40% GST rate for larger cars and specified utility vehicles without an extra cess, and JSW MG Motor India says it has already passed this change to buyers of Astor, Hector and Gloster.
