Overview

  • Constable Keith Anthony Smith was farewelled at a private funeral in Devonport on June 27, followed by a procession through Devonport and Ulverstone.
  • Smith joined Tasmania Police in 2000 and earned the Commissioner’s Medal in 2011, the National Police Service Medal and other honours during his 25-year career.
  • He was fatally shot on June 16 during execution of a court-ordered home repossession warrant on a rural property in North Motton.
  • The killing was the first fatal police shooting in Tasmania since 1999 and prompted professional standards and coronial investigations.
  • A Specialist Operations Group officer wounded the 46-year-old alleged offender before he surrendered and he now faces charges of murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.
