Tasmania Lashed by Destructive Winds, Two Dead and Thousands Without Power

Utilities warn some restorations could take up to 72 hours.

Overview

  • Bureau of Meteorology warnings covered all of Tasmania and parts of Victoria, NSW, South Australia and the ACT as a vigorous front swept east.
  • Exposed Tasmanian sites recorded extreme gusts, including 163 km/h at Maatsuyker Island and 139 km/h at Scotts Peak, with many areas topping 100 km/h.
  • Two people died when a tree fell on a private property in the northwest, as SES reported roughly 100 requests for help over three days.
  • Damage included a collapsed wall in Burnie, a snapped power pole near Legana, multiple road blockages and weather damage that reduced services at Mersey Community Hospital; some flights to Devonport and Launceston were cancelled.
  • More than 20,000 customers lost electricity at the peak and TasNetworks cautioned that complex faults could take up to three days to fix as forecasters flagged easing conditions into Saturday and ongoing river-rise and flood risks.
