Tasmania Faces Hung Parliament as Razay Claims Final Bass Seat

Crossbenchers control which leader achieves the 18 seats required to secure confidence–supply support for a minority government.

Overview

  • Independent George Razay won the last seat in Bass after a two-week Hare-Clark count, producing a 14-Liberal, 10-Labor, 5-Greens, 1-Shooters, Fishers and Farmers and 5-independent assembly.
  • Neither Jeremy Rockliff’s Liberals nor Dean Winter’s Labor commands the 18 seats needed for a majority, forcing both to court crossbenchers for confidence–supply agreements.
  • The Greens have ruled out backing a Liberal administration, and independent Craig Garland has pledged to oppose any confidence motion in a Rockliff-led government.
  • Labor must secure support from The Greens plus at least two other crossbench MPs to form a minority administration, while the Liberals need commitments from four independents or minor-party members.
  • The Tasmanian Electoral Commission will return election writs to Governor Barbara Baker on Tuesday, initiating the formal process of commissioning a new government.
