Tarija Prosecutors File Formal Aggravated Human Trafficking Charge Against Evo Morales

The case now moves to a stage where a judge sets the date for an oral trial.

Overview

  • The Tarija prosecutor's office submitted the indictment after what it described as a meticulous review of evidence gathered since September 2024.
  • Prosecutors say the case stems from an alleged relationship with a minor in 2015–2016, with the child's mother, Idelsa Pozo, also charged, and prior measures included an arrest warrant and a migration alert.
  • A court declared Morales in contempt earlier this year for missing hearings, and he has stayed in the Chapare region under the protection of supporters since October 2024.
  • Shortly after announcing the filing, departmental prosecutor Sandra Gutiérrez said she was removed by Attorney General Róger Mariaca.
  • Morales denies the allegations as politically motivated and cites a 2020 inquiry that he says found nothing, while reports also note related complaints filed in Argentina.
