Tampa Sets Groundbreaking for West Riverwalk Extension as Construction Nears

Public input this week set the stage for crews to break ground later this month.

Overview

  • City officials unveiled new renderings and took questions at a Thursday meeting at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church.
  • The $56.8 million–$57 million project will extend the Riverwalk to the west bank with a two-mile segment as part of a 12.2-mile multimodal network.
  • Work is organized into six sections, with the first two building about 1.7 miles of west-side trail that includes two pedestrian underpass bridges.
  • Groundbreaking is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at 727 W Green St., with construction expected to begin in November and completion targeted for early 2027.
  • Funding includes $24 million in federal money and $10 million from the West Tampa CRA, and plans call for safety upgrades such as a lane reduction on the Rome–Riverside bridge, which has prompted some resident concerns about traffic and privacy.
