Tamil Nadu to Open Four More Government Arts and Science Colleges from 2025–26

The move builds on 11 colleges inaugurated days earlier to widen rural access to higher education

Overview

  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced that four additional government arts and science colleges will begin operating in the 2025–26 academic year.
  • New campuses will be located at K V Kuppam, Thuraiyur, Ulundurpet and Chengam to serve around 1,120 students in four districts.
  • Degree programs will cover Political Science, History, Commerce, Computer Science, Zoology and Business Management in both English and Tamil medium.
  • Faculty groups have raised concerns over the lack of Tamil and English majors and warned that over 4,000 existing teaching vacancies remain unfilled.
  • The expansion follows a Supreme Court ruling granting the state government greater control over university governance and placing the Chief Minister in the chancellor’s role.
