Tamil Nadu Secures Rs 30,000-Crore MoUs for Two Tuticorin Shipyards From Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock

State support centers on a new SPV and a promotion company as Cochin Shipyard also partners Korea’s HD KSOE to advance the initiative.

  • Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd have committed, via MoUs, to set up two greenfield commercial shipyards in Tuticorin with a combined outlay of Rs 30,000 crore.
  • The projects are projected to create about 55,000 jobs, with Cochin Shipyard’s first phase targeting 10,000 positions and Mazagon Dock expected to add over 45,000, according to state leaders.
  • Cochin Shipyard signed an MoU with Guidance Tamil Nadu and announced a strategic collaboration with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering to support shipbuilding in India.
  • An MoU between SIPCOT and the V O Chidambaranar Port Authority provides for a Special Purpose Vehicle, and the state plans a dedicated company to promote shipbuilding.
  • Officials describe the commitments as being at the MoU stage, with detailed contracts, land allocation and regulatory clearances still to follow; CSL says its plan may include a modern ship repair facility.
