Tamil Nadu Opens Digital Self‑Enumeration Portal for Census 2027

Officials say the online option will speed data collection by reducing door-to-door visits.

Overview

  • The Self-Enumeration Portal, which opened Friday, July 17, will accept online submissions through July 31 and generate a unique 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID for each household.
  • Residents must register via OTP verification and a captcha, choose from 16 language options, and retain the SE ID to show to census enumerators during the field visit.
  • House listing and in-person enumeration will follow from August 1 to August 30 to cover households that do not self-enumerate or need verification.
  • For the first time in the state the exercise is digital-first: enumerators will use a mobile app that sends data directly to servers and each enumerator is assigned roughly 200–250 households.
  • Officials say a three-layer security system protects submitted data and they have urged use of the official portal; the move may shorten collection time but could raise access and verification challenges for residents without reliable internet or phones.
