Tamil Nadu Opens Advanced Electrical Labs at 30 Government ITIs

The upgrade aims to modernize hands-on vocational training across 23 districts to boost employability through better equipment and employer links.

Overview

  • The state inaugurated advanced electrical laboratories at 30 government Industrial Training Institutes in Guindy, Chennai, a project delivered with Schneider Electric India at a reported cost of Rs 5.10 crore intended to serve about 9,250 trainees annually.
  • The Directorate of Employment and Training signed a memorandum of understanding with Schneider Electric to equip 40 additional ITIs at an estimated cost of Rs 6.80 crore, marking a planned next phase of the program.
  • At the ceremony the chief minister handed out training kits to electrician and wireman students and presented Rs 25,000 cheques to 15 state skill-competition winners to link training with tangible support for trainees.
  • Officials spotlighted improved facilities — including CNC machining, robotics, welding, hydraulics and pneumatics, and laser cutting — and handed appointment orders to 673 junior training officers while recognising 60 national first-rankers in trade tests.
  • State leaders said the upgrades will support placements, including specialised training for jobs in Japan, but the wider impact will depend on how the MoU rollout, staff hiring and employer links are implemented and monitored.
