Overview

• Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister E.V. Velu laid the foundation stone in Arookutty, Alappuzha, marking the formal start of the project.
• The state has allocated ₹4 crore for a 1,141 sq ft memorial designed in a jail model with a statue, museum, hall, park, and gardens.
• Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan allotted half an acre near the old jail and boat jetty, following a request from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
• The memorial stands at the site where Periyar was jailed during the 1924–25 Vaikom Satyagraha, with remnants of the original jail still present.
