Tamil Nadu Lays Foundation for Periyar Memorial at Arookutty in Kerala

Kerala granted half an acre near the old jail where he was held during the Vaikom Satyagraha for a ₹4 crore project.

Overview

  • Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister E. V. Velu led the groundbreaking for the Thanthai Periyar Memorial on September 26.
  • The memorial is planned in a jail model with a Periyar statue, a museum, a hall, a park, gardens and visitor facilities.
  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan allotted the site at the request of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, with officials expressing gratitude for the gesture.
  • Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian and Tamil Nadu Minister M. P. Saminathan attended alongside MLA Daleema Jojo, District Collector Alex Varghese and PWD engineers from both states.
  • Periyar spent about a month in the Arookutty jail after his May 21, 1924 arrest during the Vaikom Satyagraha, and remnants of the jail remain at the location.
