Tamil Nadu Launches Doorstep Ration Scheme for Elderly and Disabled

Specially equipped vans will carry essential PDS staples directly to over 21.7 lakh vulnerable beneficiaries each month to reduce access barriers.

Overview

  • Chief Minister M.K. Stalin flagged off Thayumanavar delivery vehicles in Chennai on August 12 as the scheme begins its rollout across 34,809 fair price shops.
  • Centralized lists covering 20.42 lakh senior citizens above 70 and 1.27 lakh persons with disabilities have been shared with field staff for scheduled distributions.
  • Monthly doorstep deliveries of rice, sugar, wheat, palmolein oil and toor dal will take place on the second Saturday and Sunday using vans outfitted with electronic scales and e-PoS/Aadhaar authentication.
  • The Cooperation Department has pegged the additional annual cost at ₹30.16 crore, while at least one media report cited a ₹35.92 crore allocation.
  • Officials say the programme will eliminate travel hardships for the most vulnerable and enhance transparency by digitally documenting each ration delivery.
