Tamil Nadu Inks Rs 30,000 Crore MoUs for Two Commercial Shipyards in Tuticorin

The agreements with Cochin Shipyard plus Mazagon Dock advance the plan to a formal commitment stage pending contracts, clearances, land allocation.

Overview

  • Cochin Shipyard Limited will invest Rs 15,000 crore to build a greenfield commercial yard, projecting over 10,000 jobs in phase one, including 4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect roles.
  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will commit Rs 15,000 crore for a second yard, with projected employment of more than 45,000 people, including 5,000 direct and 40,000 indirect jobs.
  • SIPCOT and the V O Chidambaranar Port Authority have signed a separate MoU to coordinate land and port linkages for the shipyard projects.
  • Guidance Tamil Nadu and the two shipbuilders exchanged documents at a signing event, with both facilities planned in the Tuticorin (Thoothukudi) district.
  • Officials indicated the new yards will integrate with existing port infrastructure, with detailed contracts, regulatory approvals and site allocation now expected as next steps.
