Overview
- Seventeen remand prisoners escaped from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni on October 26 after reportedly staging a medical emergency, and all were recaptured and remanded within about 43 hours.
- Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on November 2 ordered a three-member High-Level Committee led by retired DGP J. K. Tripathy to conduct a detailed inquiry into the Theni escape and other recent lapses.
- The panel, which includes ADGP K. Shankar and retired DIG S. Rajendran, is tasked to examine standard operating procedures, security infrastructure, technology gaps and manpower deployment and to study practices from elsewhere before reporting back.
- The state has already taken immediate administrative action by suspending nine prison staff, transferring several superintendents and replacing the DGP of Prisons with K. Shankar to restore oversight and enforce accountability.
- Officials say the review could lead to concrete upgrades such as better CCTV and access controls, clearer SOPs, stronger staffing and more training, and the government has asked for recommendations to be submitted at the earliest.
