Tamil Nadu Faces Continued Heavy Rains as New Bay System Forms

Forecasters say the developing Bay of Bengal low could strengthen into a depression and prolong downpours, raising flood, landslide and rough-sea risks.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department reported Friday that an active northeast monsoon plus a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal around Oct. 23–25 and may intensify over the next 48–72 hours.
  • Widespread waterlogging and localized flooding have hit Chennai and many districts, with MGR Nagar recording about 15 cm of rain in a 24-hour period and multiple neighbourhoods reporting inundated roads and damaged infrastructure.
  • Local authorities have mounted relief and preparedness actions including evacuations, relief camps, distribution of tens of thousands of food packets, deployment of pumps and clearing teams, and school closures in several districts.
  • Reservoirs and rivers are seeing sharp inflows that improve water stocks while also raising near-term flood risk, and the Central Water Commission has warned of rising levels in several catchments.
  • Forecasters and officials have warned of rough seas and advised fishermen not to venture out, and they say the system's eventual track and strength will determine whether rainfall persists beyond Oct. 25–26 and how severe coastal impacts will be.
