Tamil Nadu Expands School Breakfast Scheme to Classes VI–VIII

The expansion is designed to curb morning hunger, boost attendance, use urban central kitchens or rural self‑help groups to deliver meals.

Overview

  • Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the expansion on Tuesday, Sept 22, at Gandhi Gramam Corporation School in Thiruvanmiyur and ate breakfast with students before inspecting classrooms.
  • The scheme will add about 15.3 lakh students across 15,454 government and government-aided schools to the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
  • The state has committed an additional ₹217.63 crore for the current year, raising total funding for the breakfast programme to ₹724 crore.
  • Meals will be prepared in 447 integrated kitchens within Greater Chennai, 2,150 kitchens in other municipal areas, and by self‑help groups in 12,857 rural schools after a trial run highlighted gaps for district officials to fix.
  • Rollout began from the launch date statewide except in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur where the Model Code of Conduct pauses implementation, and a special committee will finalise menus and oversee hygiene and quality checks.
