Overview
- After orange alerts and flooding on November 17, the IMD issued yellow alerts for November 18 with isolated heavy rain focused on southern districts such as Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.
- Chennai saw waterlogging and school closures on Monday, while Cuddalore and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory’s Puducherry and Karaikal kept schools shut on Tuesday based on local conditions.
- Kodiyakarai in Nagapattinam recorded 12 cm in 24 hours ending Monday morning, with several other delta stations reporting 7–9 cm as the monsoon surge re‑energized.
- State and city agencies activated control rooms, deployed field teams and stepped up reservoir releases from Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Poondi; fishermen were advised to stay ashore due to squally winds of 35–45 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h.
- The IMD says the present low will keep showers going before a new low expected around November 22 that could sustain or intensify rainfall across coastal and delta districts later in the week.
