Tamil Nadu Draft Electoral Roll Shows Heavy, Clustered Deletions, With Sharp Cuts in Chennai

The figures remain provisional with a claims-and-objections window before finalisation.

Overview

  • More than half of all removals in the Special Intensive Revision draft came from two eight-district clusters grouped around Chennai and Tiruppur.
  • The Chennai cluster lost about one-fourth of its electors while the Tiruppur cluster recorded a 19.42% removal, trimming their combined share of the State electorate from 33.34% to 30.33%.
  • Chennai district alone recorded about 14.36 lakh deletions, with draft tallies showing 5.47 lakh removals in Chennai Central, 3.78 lakh in Chennai North, and 5.10 lakh in Chennai South.
  • Several Chennai Assembly seats show around 40–42% reductions, including Anna Nagar and Villivakkam, with high absolute deletions in Anna Nagar (1.18 lakh) and Kolathur (1.02 lakh).
  • Despite the cuts, most constituencies in Chennai and nearby districts still have electorates larger than votes polled in 2021 and 2024, even as experts cite migration and COVID-era shifts and parties dispute the scale and nature of deletions.
