Tamil Nadu Designates Elathur Lake as Third Biodiversity Heritage Site

The move brings 37.42 hectares under statutory protection to conserve a key migratory-bird wetland.

Overview

  • The state notified the site under Section 37(1) of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
  • The Erode Collector said the government notification was first issued on January 28, 2025.
  • Surveys have recorded 187 bird species, including the endangered steppe eagle, vulnerable river tern and greater spotted eagle, and near-threatened Asian woolly-necked stork and black-headed ibis.
  • During peak migratory months, the lake hosts nearly 5,000 birds.
  • Officials say the BHS status ensures permanent protection and local stewardship, placing Elathur alongside Arittapatti (2022) and Kasampatty (2025) in the state’s growing network.
