Tamil Nadu Braces for More Rain as Bay of Bengal Depression Weakens

Forecasters say the system that crossed northeast Sri Lanka is fading to a low-pressure area, keeping coastal showers in play into next week.

Overview

  • IMD and the Regional Meteorological Centre kept a yellow alert in place for Chennai on Sunday, with orange alerts for several coastal and delta districts.
  • Heavy rain is possible at isolated locations in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Villupuram, as well as Puducherry, with brief intense spells possible.
  • Surface winds of 35–45 kmph and rough seas are expected along the Tamil NaduPuducherry coast, and fishermen have been advised to stay away from these waters.
  • The RMC revised its guidance and withdrew heavy-rain warnings for some northern districts, including Tiruvallur, after changes in the system’s movement.
  • The wet spell is forecast to persist until around January 16 with rainfall reducing from Tuesday, and minimum temperatures are likely to be normal or below average through Monday.
