Tamil Nadu Allocates Relief for Families Displaced by Delhi’s Madrasi Camp Demolition

The state has allocated Rs50 lakh for Rs8,000 cash grants, Rs4,000 in essential supplies per displaced family following the eviction.

Overview

  • On June 1, Delhi authorities demolished the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura under a High Court order to clear the Barapullah drain ahead of the monsoon season.
  • Chief Minister M K Stalin announced a Rs50 lakh package on June 16 to deliver one-time cash grants of Rs8,000 and essential commodities worth Rs4,000 to each of over 370 displaced Tamil families.
  • A joint survey certified 189 families as eligible for Economically Weaker Section flats in Narela, but most units lacked running water, electricity and sanitation and were deemed unfit for habitation.
  • Another 181 families have not received any alternative accommodation and remain homeless after the demolition.
  • Stalin has urged Delhi authorities to upgrade community infrastructure in Narela, provide dedicated transport links for residents and relax eligibility criteria to extend housing to all affected families.
