TALIS 2024: Singapore Teachers Work Longer Hours, Report Higher Stress, Lead in AI Use

New TALIS data highlights heavier workloads with higher stress in Singapore, prompting MOE to expand tech-led measures to cut non-teaching tasks.

Overview

  • Full-time teachers in Singapore report 47.3 working hours a week versus the OECD average of 41, unchanged from 2018 yet still above international peers.
  • Twenty-seven percent say they experience a lot of work-related stress compared with 19 percent across the OECD, a four-point rise from 2018.
  • Time in class is lower and non-teaching duties weigh more heavily, with 17.7 hours spent teaching, 8.2 on lesson preparation, 6.4 on marking, and four on administration.
  • About 75 percent use artificial intelligence for teaching or facilitation, far above the OECD average of 36 percent, with strong uptake of online and hybrid instruction.
  • Retention pressures persist as 29 percent plan to leave teaching and 40 percent of those under 30 intend to exit within five years, as MOE rolls out Parents Gateway e-submissions, after-hours messaging guidance, and automated marking tools.
