Overview
- At his preliminary hearing on June 5, Atieno was granted bail after appearing via videolink from HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
- Prosecutors describe an ‘oppressive and controlling relationship’ in which Atieno dictated Buchanan’s finances, diet, personal grooming and access to TV and the gym, and allegedly physically assaulted her.
- The allegations cover controlling and coercive behaviour from December 2015 to May 2018, assault occasioning actual bodily harm between January 2012 and January 2015, harassment from January 2021 through December 2024 and breach of a non-molestation order.
- Under his bail agreement, Atieno must surrender his passport, comply with a curfew and is barred from contacting Buchanan or leaving England and Wales.
- A five-day trial at Southwark Crown Court is set to begin on April 13, 2026, and Atieno has denied all charges against him.
